Who We Are

The heritage of St. Dominic includes a deeply contemplative orientation to prayer joined with a passion to preach God's Word in both words and action. This is expressed in the words of the Dominican theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas: "Contemplata aliis tradere," which simply means to hand on to others the fruits of our contemplation.

Religious life is a wonderful gift of the Catholic Church to the world. To the casual observer it may be difficult to distinguish the differences of these different communities. And yet each congregation lives out the call to religious life with a particular charism or gift, offering this gift to the greater body of the Church.

Dominican sisters and friars, also known as the Order of Preachers, live their lives supported by four common values, often referred to as the Four Pillars of Dominican Life, they are: community life, common prayer, study and service. St. Dominic called this four-fold pattern of life the "holy preaching."

We, the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, continue this heritage of a rich intellectual life and love of study united with intense engagement in the issues of our times. In the tradition of St. Dominic, we remain sensitive to the needs of the materially and spiritually poor. Our ministry of service is supported by a strong community life and common prayer.
